SO YOU WANT TO BE A PHOTOGRAPHER

OK, you think this photography stuff is pretty fun and you are considering it as a career. Lets talk. A career in photography is not for the faint of heart. If you want to be an accountant, you can go to school, get an accounting degree, and if you do pretty well, be assured that you will be able to get a job that will pay you a living wage. Most "regular" jobs are like that. Photography, and any other art job, is usually a little different. There are a lot more people who want to be photographers than there are jobs. That means that to get a good job and make a living wage you need to be really good at what you do.If you work for yourself (as a lot of photographers do) you need good business and marketing skills. I can't emphasize how important those skills are. If you don't think you are capable of being a good business person you need to work for a company as a photographer and leave the business part for people who are good at it. I've seen a lot of mediocre photographers with good business skills that are more successful than more talented photographers with mediocre business skills.

There is a show titled "Inside that Actors Studio" that I sometimes watch. The Actors Studio is a prestigious acting school. The show interviews famous successful actors. One time a student in the audience asked the celebrity if they thought it was a good idea to be going into acting. The celebrity (can't remember who) said, "If there is anything I can say to dissuade you from being an actor, then you shouldn't be one". I always though that was good advise for photographers too.

Still want to go for it? Good : )

The way to get where you want to go is:

1. Know where you want to go.

2. Take the steps you need to get there.

Lets back up a little bit. All photography jobs are not created equal. There is definitely a photographer food chain. I'm not trying to offend any photographers out there, this is, of course, just my opinion.
